This is the street sport of Parkour, invented in France, and is one of the reasons why I think commuting should be recongised as a sport.

You're not saying that the Damien Walters vid was Parkour are you?
Just checking, because it isn't. There was a tiny bit of free-running.

But I do love how when you look up PK on wikipedia you get a pic of Danny! Grin
Daniel Illabaca is the definition of Parkour! Cheesy

Damien Walters doesn't need stilts! He jumps higher than an NBA player on
steroids and Power-thirst!... Power-roids! Grin

But I'm sure he would indeed be awesome on them. Smiley

That video is amazing, if he was to put a pair of bocks on never mind jumping 6 feet high, more like 12, the guy can move. I would love to do what he did and freerunners do but i know thats proberly impossible and would probably kill myself, lmao. Grin

I was under the impression that Parkour and free-running were two names for the same thing. What is the difference?

nah parkour is jumpng over things and gaps were as free running is jumping over things with a flip of some kined and then theres the best 1 wich it tricking wich is pure flips and spins and spinging flips Tongue so the way i c it is that parkour is the worst then free run then tricking is the best

Parkour is about fluidity and efficiency of movement getting from A to B, free-running is about tricks and cool moves while getting from A to B

I'll download the video to see if it helps the distinction: I only read the thread before.

It's all mostly the same thing, with some differences. It's like trying to differentiate speed, thrash, death metal et al. It's all metal, but with some differences. I think, and I could be wrong, but Parkour is the grand daddy of it all ( unless you get into the whole ninja business).

This guy's spot on. Parkour is about moving through ones environment as efficiently and fluidly (and often, though not necessarily, as speedily) as possible. Therefore flips and direction reversals are not usually a part of Parkour... though it could be argued that in 'very specific circumstances' a flip could be used as Pakour. Parkour usually involves overcoming obstacles and gaps using various vaulting, jumping and climbing techniques. Free-running uses many of the same techniques and is also concerned with movement through ones surroundings, but is more concerned with aesthetic appeal, therefore includes flips and spins. Tricking is purely flips performed on flat ground.

The movie you were talkng about - District 13 (Banlieue 13), stars David Belle and Cyril Raphaelle. Belle was the creator of Parkour, and although that movie contained a few flips here and there... it serves as a pretty good example and definition of what PK is about.

I kind of want to strangle Greg a little bit... no offense. But his comment was ignorant, biased, and a little stupid (seriously, no offence!). In the same way it would be stupid for me to say that Parkour is the best... though obviously I think it is! lol. ...or in the same way it would be stupid to say that football is the best.

They are all different disciplines. Greg is obviously drawn to tricking because he likes flips. So it is the best... to him. However if you needed to escape or rescue someone from a burning building (or save your sister and a small region of France from a bomb!) then Parkour would be the best. Which discipline is best obviously depends on your preferences and the circumstances.

Personally I practice all three disciplines. My favourite is PK. But I do also love to do various flips. As is the case for the majority of traceurs these days. Training gymnastics does afterall increase control and spacial awareness which are valuable assets to the traceur.

The guy in the posted vid (Damien Walters) is an acrobat. He is therefore a natural tricker and able to do various Parkour and free-running techniques... but I wouldn't label the vid as being a demonstration of either discipline. Rather he is showcasing his various awesome skills! ^_^ Mostly acrobatic in nature.

...Sorry for the lecture. I wrote way more than I intended to. But the main points were, PK, free-running, tricking, acrobatics... and football... are all different displines. All are good... to those who like them! Greg is wrong and I write too much. You should absolutely watch B13! Damien Walters has built in bocks in each calf muscle, and is made almost entirely of win... hense the small craters he leaves in the ground with each jump. ...aaand that's it.

Class dismissed.

Best not, I'm a bit big to fight Greggles. Wink

and im not wrong its just my point of veiw on the subject

hmm... I think you'll find that was exactly my point! Wink Sorry if I'm too subtle for you.

The summary can be read in jest... that's how it was written anyway. Sorry again if my humour is also too subtle for you... Damien doesn't really leave craters when he jumps.
