I personally think that if you are trying to get more hits on a website that is beneficial to powerising, that's fine.  But I think anyone who spams for drugs should be blocked. I know of at least 3 in the past month or 2, wanting to advertise some prescription. In order to keep this website as great (or even better) as it is, we need to do something.

What do you guys/gals think?

Matt and Dom....any ideas on how we can help keep the spam under control?

The forum should be upgraded too as this is an old version and the newer one has been written to help prevent spam posts.
SMF 1.1 Final was released yesterday and the release candidates have been thoroughly tested and used for some time now.

I agree with PK, have an approval system so that BOTs can't just sign on and post.
However, with the number of members steadily growing, this may end up quite a lengthy task for matt...
Perhaps have a word filter built in that prevents any posts/topics with certain words

could just have mini-moderators cos you can setup ordinary members with the permission to edit posts (i dont think giving 10 ppl deleting post powers is a good idea but at least the dodgy words can be removed until real mod comes along)

I'm on a few other forums that have a few boards assigned to each mod. On 1 forum, the mods have a section that can be read by all, but only the mods can post. Every time they delete a thread they explain why (example: spamming is not welcome). If the thread is locked, they do the same as I've seen on here and tell why within the thread. Deleted posts are usually explained in the moderator boards. And finally, modified posts are usually in both locations (if done for profane language, a small **modified for profane language** is added to the bottom of the post...If the person has been warned multiple times, the mods sometimes discuss their punishment.

Honestly, the only punishment I've seen is either blocking them from posting for x number of days, or their posts have to be reviewed before they will be visible to everyone else (that one's from a board with 11 sections of the forum, each has usually 2 mods, and over 6,000 registered users)

that doesnt really apply to spammers though. I dont think we have any serious problems with bad language or people needing a bit of nudge for being nasty.

What we have attacking us at the moment is bots, the only way I can see of preventing them is to have an approval system so that they can't just sign on and post, it's how I had to control my forum and it runs fine Smiley
