One thing that you should alway have on you anyway is an ICE contact if someone should need it !
In
Case of
Emergency

Emergency services look for this even on your phone ( simplier than calling MUM !? )  Undecided

Ha! thought I'd forgotten about this hadn't you?

I had. Plus I've been busy. and drunk. Anyway.

Below is the FIRST DRAFT of what is a vague (short n sweet) of basic gym safety.
Feel something is missing? Want something changed? NOW is the time to speak up.
As stated earlier, these are not rules or regs for anyone to follow. It's a simple list that will be made available to help people organising gym meets with some guidance.

  • Suitable protection should be worn by all people using the gym.
This includes Wrist Guards and Kneepads as a minimum. Elbow pads are also recommended, as is a helmet if attempting flips off of mats.
  • When new tricks are being attempted, there should always be a member of ground crew present or at least another bocker spotting.
  • Never attempt anything you are not 99% confident on, unless you have assistance or a spotter
  • Until you are landing at least 90% of your flips, you should not be attempting them on hard ground or thin mats.
  • If sliding mats underneath someone, it should always be done from the side, not from the front or back, to avoid collision between the bocker and the slider.

Someone needs to be responsible for the session and needs to make it clear at the start of each session. The following list are items that the person responsible should consider.

  • Emergency contact details taken
  • Risk assessment & Area check completed
  • Equipment Check Completed
  • Medical Information checked
  • Safety briefing completed
  • Safety officer designated
  • Medical kit/bag
  • Individual Personal Equipment Check completed
  • Code of Conduct for Participants

When we have a final version, I'll get it onto word/pdf/html docs and basically make it available everywhere.
So have a read and voice your thoughts.

Thanks Matt, XS, yep you are correct that much will not be followed, or atleast not regularly everytime. But inside the guide are a few essiential bits and pieces. Also, re kit checks, if my gym is anything to go by. Checks would get less and less as people get used to kit and automatically place it in suitable places. And acheck becomes little more than a glance around the room, but regularly-- cos often kit  gets moved about throughout  a session.

whilst many of the 'check things' may be placed on a groups website as 'standing orders' and a noob can just be directed to read them. I certainly dont think Im going to be asking Sprog about the contition of his stilts. However, if I knew someone ( maybe becuase of forum discussions) had some issues, then I'd probably 'casually' ask if they were OK.

If alarge number of beginners were involved , a real formal course, a visiting group turned up or  ( as happened with the JJ's) 5 turned up the 1st gym meet after Christmas, then yes I think a more formal chat would take place.

Right , now direct comments.

The list of things for the responsible person to ensure put 1st--seems more chronological

State that if nesessary that person should say 'no' or 'stop'  even to people of greater ability

The code of conduct -seems a bit vague  and worrying. Maybe call it a 'personal reponisbility' bit. lets face it the most dangerous things in a gym are the people! So the old saying 'look before you leap' could not be more truer than on bocks Grin. Besides pads, dehydration is a danger so mention bringing and drinking liquids. Not best example  but Joe drank v little on the 10K walk for life  but had 1 beer after - it went str8 to head  and the 1 flip he did after was 'well dodgy'

Rather than 90 and 99%  Id put in 'fully confident' or 'completly confident'. people 'simple aint gonna do the math'

The 'sliding matt' bit. Im a bit nervous on this. Ive seen it on tramps. But never seen ,let alone used the idea with bocks. Im unsure of introducing an idea in just words that people may go off and try and use in  inappropriate ways.  Id really like to see it demonstrated on a few vids 1st. I certainly hope to try it with Joe Sunday after next -and Iexpect Ash will film it. i caution to leave it out till 1 can be responably sure people know whats what --then a quick update

Thats for now. In the ature of 'down time of the brain', Im sure something will pop into my brain at some dull moment in the future --so sorr 'I may be back'

Mat slide in works well for stationary skills like a back flip done from a bounce in place.  Traveling skills, IMHEO just adjust your runup, bounce up and take off point to match where the mat is.  NO slide in method needed.

The slide in brought up an old idea though.  A Firemans Net type mat.  Started a thread about it HERE.

OK  Im gonna shout out Water again. We keep saying  drink plenty.

But today I deff saw the effects of not taking enuff.

Now it was a very nice but very hot day. After not much more than an hour 1 of our number became 'noticably distressed by the heat'. She had been desperatly trying to do the 'gtting up of th ground' for sometime.

Needed a bt of water and an hour in the shade to recover. Quite shocked me how quick it came on.
