The most effective method I have found of slowing down is sprinting through mud, slipping, hyperextending your knee, tripping over forwards, doing a partial frontflip, and grinding along the pavement on your back to a halt. Resulting in ripped T-shirt, Ripped Trousers, Sprained Wrist (even with wrist guards), brusing down legs, damage to springs anfd frames, and this:  Did that Monday night btw, is healing up nicely now

Good luck with that, just don't sprint when there are people all around.
Or just sprint on the road rather than on the pavement.
