Powerising / Problems / Have I gotten too Stiff a Spring?
|
on: April 28, 2008, 11:18:36 PM

Howdy, So I got my powerizers about 3 or 4 weeks ago now and they came with some M70 fibreglass springs. Within about a day i was bottoming them out with every bounce and not getting much height. Last week I replaced them with some M100s which are the new carbon/glassfibre mix after some investigating and under the advice that I should be 2 springs above my actual weight to get some intense spring action.
Now I weigh 12st, which is around 76kg. With the new springs, I have found that my running and one footed leaping is miles and miles faster than on the old M70s but when jumping I'm a bit out of control and it seems to take more energy to get a decent amount of height and when I do get the height I am drifting all over the place and spend too much time correcting where I'm going to do any grabs and whatnot. I am getting higher than the last springs, but it is much harder energy wise and a lot less accurate.
So basically have I been stupid and ordered springs that are far too tough for me?

Powerising / Practising / Re: Fall Recovery Skill Video

I think the most important thing is learning not to try and prevent the fall, but rather go with it and be able to control and roll out of it. I think it's likely that most breakages are from people panicking and trying to prevent an inevitable fall rather than just taking it and rolling out of it onto the shoulder. Trying to stop a whole fall with just the wrist is never going to end well as it's not likely that everyone's wrists are used to taking the full force of a person's body crashing through it.

It's all technique. You need to bounce more from your heels, which could be helped by altering the angle of the footplates.
I just fitted a pair of M100's to my bocks and I only weigh like 75kg or something.

Yes coach, you can. It's stupid but some PT make loads from not really doing anything.
As it turned out, I was referred to the physiotherapist after my doctor couldn't find anything wrong with me. It wasn't untill I saw a specialist who x-rayed me a bunch of times and did a number of other tests that I was finally diagnosed.

Make sure you go through your GP first. He will recommend the best course of action, because sometimes physiotherapist or chiropractors aren't the best first port of call (which I found out the hard way. Weeks of physio which just aggravated the problem).

I suffer from Sacroiliitis so I am permenantly on painkillers to control it. You're back is fairly important, so at the first signs of continuous pain you should get it checked out. I can tell you now that living with a horrible back pain which prevents you from walking properly amongst other things, which no idea what is causing it, is not a happy time. It took me something like 2 years to finally get a diagnosis and a treatment that works, so don't delay. Get checked out today. (see what I did there?)

Sweet video, esp the wall flip, im liking that a lot . I want to get onto flips, but that means going up to my gym, signing up, wating for months on end and probably not even getting in! When i was 4 i signed up for this gym and they still havent got back to me! So im not quite sure how i can practise flips safetly. (the local trampolining sessions are full) . Just whack on a helmet and try it on grass. That's what I did. Although, do you have experience in gymnastics or trampolining?

Sweet. This is such a wierd coincidence. I jumped the bench in my garden last night for the first time and you're right. It's much much scarier than you'd think.

I can tell you now, it's not that restrictive, although I've not used it on my bocks. There doesn't really seem to be a need. I only use wristguards, some knee/shins and a pisspot.
I'm a downhiller which is why I have a set of 661 body armour amongst other things.

Well played. Where is your helmet though? I was doing flips the other day, but I underrotated because of my underpowered springs and embarassingly kneed myself in the face. I now have a black eye. [ ]
