I'll take a better look after work ( on my way out now ) I'd say you should all check your's now 

The crosspiece may have had a kink in it ( been knocked ? ) the pressure bent it side ways when the spring compressed. This forced bent it even more and cracking it lower down before snapping in two. With only the top holding the spring the recoil snaped the top on the top bearing off.
If you look at the crosspiece you should find the metal ends bent sideways and the fact the tops uneven would piont to the bock was not parallel with the spring when it snapped off !
