Hey everyone!
I persuaded my dad to get me a trampoline net in which case he did Smiley. I recieved the net today, and landed my first flip today which i'm VERY happy about, but i just wondered if there's anything else to learn now that i've learnt how to do a flip. Could anyone suggest something and how maybe tell me how or just send me a video link?

Thanks! Grin

How confidently are you landing your flips? 100% of the time? 50% of the time?

One thing I found quite fun was doing an X out front flip.
The way i learnt to do this was get a football or similar and put it between your feet, do a front flip and let go of the ball while in the flip, once you got this you can keep going and open your legs even more each time.

Apart from that the next step is backflips but that takes a lot of confidence to get over the fear of going over backwards  Grin

Ha, i'll definately give that ago!  I managed to to a pike front, but that's about it really. Hopefully soon i'll be able to take it to the next level, and maybe get a few video's on here to show my progress Smiley. But we'll have to see about that! Tongue.

Thanks guys, i think i'm gonna go back out for a little while, see if i can get anymore moves in there.

hey powergirl.
one thing that I learned just last night was how to do a barani. the trick is to twist your body when your head is facing downwards from a frontflip. if you are confident with your front flips, then this should be a cinch. if you cant get the twist right away try putting your hand down(only one if that is possible for you) and manually twist your body. another thing to keep in mind is your hips. the more you twist them to the side, the more twist you get.
hope this helps.

ooh! I'll give that ago! I've always loved the look of barani's! I was going to do gymnastics when i was younger, but they got back to me when i was around 11 asking if i wanted to join, but then i was all stiff and couldn't be bothered! I wish i'd taken that chance now, but i think i might join a trampolining club, that could help a lot. Smiley I'll give it a go!
Thanks.

when i was learning to do a backflip i learned by jumping, then tucking and landing in a tuck, then you kind of lean back a bit while still in the tuck and do a backflip. its then allot easyer to try and do a proper one.

[Warning : Long Post ]

Congratulations landing on your first front flip. I'm sure you were totally jumping up and down with excitment aftwards.

I have been trying to find the easiest way to teach someone how to get over the fear of doing the back flip. Technically it is a lot easier to land as you can spot your landing sooner then a front flip, but the fear factor of a blind take-off is what you have to over come.

Have someone experienced with back flips spot you. If you are learning on your own, patience and proper technique will be your best guardian.

Watch a lot of videos and practice in parts.

Some will say, practice backhand springs, or back bends first.

Some will say work it up from low to high so that you minimize your impression of the danger you are naturally adverse to experience.

Stay low, bent, and just bounce a little until you get the maximum height, and then throw your legs around enough to land on your knees. When you feel confident, move to a standing position. Again, throw your legs around enough to just land on your knees.  You will find this to be pretty easy. When you first begin at the standing level, you will most likely cheat and look over your dominant side shoulder. This is a bad habit to pick up.

The other step is really practice the take-off. This is probably the most critical part. When I was first learning, in about 7 hrs, spread through out the week, all I did is practice the take-off.  The real danger with flips is not getting enough height. Most people launch themselves more horizontally then vertically.

Get maximum height in your jump, with your arms above your head. When you knees are about the height of your head when standing, bring them up to your chest.  Do not look backwards. This causes most of the problems with back flips. keep looking straight ahead. Your arms should then wrap around the knees, behind the knees or just touching the top of your knees. But only rotate enough so that you will land on your back instead of rolling completely over. Visualize the take-off and practice the take-off. When you have done enough of the take-offs, you will naturally feel when you are ready to let the rotation continue.

To understand the movement, you lay flat on the ground with your arms stretched out. Lift your knees to your chest. You will notice that the body naturally tends to roll backwards. You body will do the same vertically if you bring your knees up to your chest.

How do you know when you are getting proper height on your flips? When you come out of the rotation, you should feel like you could land like one of those martial arts landing they do on movies, where they seem to float down in that spread arm position. Also, your landing should be about the same spot you launched from. If you find yourself very close to the edge of the trampoline, then you know your launching yourself more horizontally then vertically. If this is the case, keep practicing just the take-off.

It’s also good to get into a counting habit for the jumps. I find this to help my concentration and focus. I like the “ 5-6-7-8” jump. This prepares me mentally to commit myself when the count completes, and it prepares me to link my jump as I improve.

Since you are working towards transferring your skills on the trampoline to your stilts, I also recommend practicing the spring board take-off. Where you take a step, then hop as high as you can with your dominate foot, while swinging your hands up, land on both feet, and jump straight up, while lifting your hands above your head again. The first part of the technique looks like you are going to do a flying knee kick to someone. But remember to jump vertically.

Some other moves to work on to get comfortable with the back.
A reverse Pike, but instead of straightening the back after you touch your toes, just land on your back.
Back rolls to handstand.
Back bends
Backhand springs
Make sure to stretch out your neck and back.

What is the most important lesson? Learn to protect your neck and head.

If you know you are bailing out of the flip or had a bad take off, and you are going to land on your head or neck, use your arms and put them behind your head. This greatly prevents the whiplash most people suffer when crashing onto their head.

Sorry for the long post. Hope some of this is useful.

Thats WAS a definate warning Tongue.
Haha, thanks very much, and indeed i was Grin.
You shouldn't be sorry for a long post!  I am most grateful! thanks very much! I actually learnt a lot in that post and that has given more confidence because i know what to do now and what not to. I love to listen to music on the trampoline, this was i can feel the beat of a song, and when i'm ready, i'll go from something i want to try out. Most people have told me to learn the 180 frontflip, but i'm not quite sure how to do that yet. I'll see what i can do Grin

Thanks very much! Smiley

I've been meaning to try a front flip 180, but don't get how to twist....I've searched high and low for the best step by step method to doing this. So far i've come to a lot on Youtube, but none of them seem to help me out :S. Anybody?

Do you have a trampoline, or diving board available to you?

If you have your front flip on your bocks already somewhere do lot of front flip land squarely and immediately bounce a half turn. (trampoline or bocks or mini tramp etc.)

This will help you figure out your natural twist direction and help you learn that twist.  Granted this is a late twist as opposed to an early twist (Brani) that most folk do but its much easier to play with and build confidence on.  Use visuals. Land looking at something eye level and well in front of you. Then jump turn looking out and downard at something to help you land.   Eventually you will twist 180 "just prior" to touching the ground.

It's funny your first flip twist using this method often happens by accident.  You just sorta skip the "look land jump twist" part .  You'll go flip - twist -  land w/ Look  instead of what you've been practicing:   Flip- land w/ look -  bounce twist w/ look at new spot.

By the way.... note that FLIP comes first allways.

The advantage of this style over a brani is it will relate better to learning twising more than 180 and even relate to back flip twisting where the Brani has a much less correlation.

you can play with this off diving boards too.  As you are at  the normal point of when you open from the front flip to hit the body position that readys you to enter the water upright..... as you do that open action.... turn a 1/2 turn and face the diving board.  Look for the water below the board when you decide to turn.

Yeah, i have a trampoline in my back garden, i persuaded my dad to get me a net to be on the safe side Wink.
Ooh cheers for that! I think i might go out in a bit, and have a bit of a practise. It's the late turning bit which i can't master yet. I'm trying to get my sister for a bit of help because she was a gymnast, and she's the one that taught me the front flip really well. I can't ask her now because she won't talk to me Grin, so i'll try in a few mintues or so.

Cheers coach, couldn't answer the question better myself!
