Hi All,

Having seen these videos of people flipping over fences and stuff like that I'm clearly inspired. I want to be able to do stuff like that.
Clearly some people have done gymnastics in the past which must be able to help whereas most of us (i'd imagine) have never done anything of the sort.

This became apparent when I was at the Bradford gym showing the inability to do even the most basic of things, a front somersault (sumi). This really annoyed me as it cant be that difficult to do but clearly I have a barrier to break in order to do it.

So, my reason for this thread is that I want to know what gymnastic moves should be worked on in order to transpose them to PRs and beyond.

Thanks in advance,

Lukey

For flips and things, you need the confidence. Ideally the best thing is trampoline lessons, or owning your own trampoline, so you can just practice and practice until you feel confident.
Practice with someone else who has the block or can already do flips, you can push each other onwards and learn from each other.

That's all I can really think of Embarrassed

as i've posted in another thread, i'm currently getting private lessons in a gym and after 4 hours of lessons in a month i'm stuck at "almost there" as a few other of us are.  i have a trampoline in my back yard i now feel that it hasn't helped me much as i can do fronts/backs easily on the trampoline.  most of the rotation speed comes from your arms and what i've been doing is this:  my takeoff is ok and my height is adequate but 2/3 into my rotation my arms go out then back anticipating the landing which is always on my a** because that tends to kill the rotation. a lot of this is lack of confidence as stated previously but you need faster and tighter rotation on risers than on the trampoline.   i should be throwing down my arms, tucking my chin and then after full rotation arms in front to balance the landing.  all this happens in a second and i'm not consciously making those actions so i've taken a step back and my last lesson was and probably my next also will be done on the tumble track without risers to break this bad habit and correctly utilize my arms and get the correct motion as "second nature"  before going at it again with risers on.   also the motion of throwing up the arms on takeoff will result in much better heights, it's good timing that will make for consistent correct flips which is important when there are no longer crash pads below.   again i'm 44 years old and a mistake can be more costly for me than for some of you young bucks that can shake off a fall where i might shatter.

lukey i suggest taking up trampolining can get you a good feel for sumis teaches you to tuck and to go up not forwards. Its also a lot easier to learn sumis on a trampoline than starting to try them on bocks first + its less painfull give it a shot

Cheers for your responses so far, I've got trampolining tonight and have been trampolining for over 6 months (at least) so I'l really push it for sumi's tonight.

my main problem is also confidence - I'm older too, like Chuck, so i am very aware of how a fall could affect my life - particularly as I'm job-hunting at the mo.

I'd love to be able to get a trampoline to build my confidence and practise some moves but living in a 12th floor flat that is not an option.....

Although trampolining is good for body position and technique, it doesnt teach you everything you need to know so dont be thinking if you can do a front sum on a tramp that u can flip on bocks.

Becky has done a lot of trampolining and both me and jono have a fair amount of trampoline experience and it still takes a long time and a lot of effort, as the videos show...and we aint there yet!
