i have found some clear duct tape witch i think would be perfect for wrapping aroung your coloured tape on your springs so the tape doesnt get muddy. i havent got any yet but ive got the link im not sure if it will look too shiney or not clear enough so if anyone has got some on theirs or is going to then please post pictures for the rest to see!!

heres the link

Interesting.  But I find narrow tape wraps the curved and changing diameter of the spring much neater, without wrinkles.

Just so you know this stuff isn't really all that clear, its translucent, you can see light though it, and some blurry color, but It really just looks bad, I wouldn't reccomend using it on your springs, you'd have better luck with like 5 layers of packing tape than a layer of this if you acutally want to see the color through it.

Duct tape would add some good protection, but a final wrap with some colored (or black) electrical tape finishes it off nicely.  If your springs come in yellow, and you like that look, just make sure your final wrap is with yellow tape.  I agree that the "clear" look isn't going to look very good.

Frankly, I think the best protection would be a slit bicycle inner tube over the spring -- then tightly wrapped with the colored electrical or hockey tape of your choice.  That method gives you good protection and the ability to color the springs with any color and design you like.  People have gotten very creative.
