YES you heard right! my dear brother was WALKING on his bocks, and for some reason we dont know he lost balance, and due to the engles of his arms when he hit the ground he broke both his elbows, and are now immobalized for 3 weeks.  he cant even pull his pants down to take a piss without help.  So for future notice to the rest of you, keep in mind that when u fall, dont hit the ground w ur hands first w bendt elbows or u might just be as unlucky as him! luckily it didnt hurt when it happened and the fractures to his bone are small and clean so it will take only 3 weeks to heal.  so low momentum does not mean ur guaranteed not getting any worse than a bruise! One good thing came out of this, a male nurse that took an interest in how he managed to break both his elbows took an interest in bocking and has agreed to meet us at a park to have a go (hopefully we will get a new bocker in norway out of this!!) and the doctor was amazed as it was the first time she had heard of (or seen) two identical fractures on both elbows/arms.  we had a lot of laughs about this and i rubbed it in that he must be the first person in history to break both arms WALKING on bocks, then he reminded me whos gonna be his nurse for three weeks ^^

anyways he took it like  a man (up the bum) and we had a blast in the hospital waiting room!! got a few little kids to not feel so bad about their cuts and bruises and have a mighty good laugh at his situation.  remembers, always find the good in any situation! Smiley

It seems that all the freak accidents end up here... You guys really need to brush up on your common sense.  I think that maybe we need to promote the use of pads and safety equipment.

we do that already, but I don't think pads would have saved him.

I'm fairly certain that Kevlar or high impact ABS arm guards would have prevented his elbow from shearing off.  My arm guards saved my butt on more than one occasion where I would have caused a LOT of damage to my body.  Don't underestimate the power of good pads, is all i'm saying.

We can't second guess what "would" have happened, but what did happen was that he didn't take due dilligence to protect himself.  We all sometimes have the "it can't happen to me" attitude... but the real issue is that it did happen.

Not knowing how he actually landed and which way (fwd or bkwrd) he fell I can't speculate butttttt.... again would really like to see folk put together a HOW TO FALL video that shows methods to catch oneself in a way that  minimalizes injury.

I would be HAPPY to help!! I teach how to fall to tumblers. Just got to brainstorm with some Bockers to adapt what I teach to Bocking. some of it needs to be modified to fit the extra height and Im not experienced enough to see these adaptations clear enough in my mind yet.

Broken elbows I really feel are very much into the completely preventable injury catagory with proper fall techniques and of course proper safety equipment minimalizes things even more. Wearing safety gear is added protection that can make up for "some" errors in catching a fall.

Geo, GREAT idea.  I'm going to seriously consider working on this in the near future with Nick. (xarnusonci)

Pads greatly reduce and dissipate the impact energy that is focused on an area, like an elbow.  Dissipate even a small amount of that energy and it can mean the difference between a broken elbow or just a sore elbow.  It's just asking for 6 weeks in a cast if you don't wear pads.  I'm not at all sympathetic to those who don't.

he fell forward, and his elbows didnt even touch the ground, the fall itself was not painfull int he least and afterwards he carried the bocks allt he way home without complaint. he put his arms out w them bendt at the elbow, my theory is that they fractured cus his elbows were at a funny angle and the impact pluss his weight was too much for the bone...

ok sounds like the common injury of trying to stiff arm catch a fall or something along that line.

Sorry it happend to him.

If he was wearing wrist gaurds then the angle he put his arms forward to catch himself put the force into the area that broke and not the wrist.... With his arms more forward or more backward they could have broke at the wrist instead if he was not wearing wrist gaurds.   With them and a slight different angle of the arms on the catch W.Gaurds  would have probably prevented a wrist break.

With an absorbing pushup action (as opposed to STOP my fall action) of the arms to catch the fall, or other methods, NOTHING would have broke, well better said the odds would have been greatly reduced that nothing would have broke.

Nothing agains your brother.

People just dont know how to fall.  Well unless your were one of those kids who figured this out already cause your were a bounce around, ruff and tumble  maniac kind of kid most your life anyway and/or have done some higher level athletics.
