I looked at my hooves for the first time in a couple days and realized they were getting pretty battered.  Here's what they looked like...

ya, im pretty sure your not supposed to see the bolts...  Smiley  lol.  So I go to my bike storage shed and grab a tire.  (insert pic of tire here)

lol.

It's a 16 inch 'todler' wheel.  I liked the white tread (wanted to be different)

I cut it in half, and then took about half an inch off the sides (the wire included) like so:

(I used an angle grinder with a metal blade, cut through it like butter!)
Taking the wire off made the tire MUCH more plyable and easier to attatch. Of course, my tire was old and crusy, but you get the idea.

Now to put it all together.  I went to the local hardware store and got some hose clamps.

(these are all the same size ring, just tighted differently)

I mounted the tire and straped it on.  I didnt have to trim the tire again, the length of half was just right.  Here is the progression:

(GET AS TIGHT AS POSIBLE BEFORE PUTTING ON STRAPS!!!)

DONE!!!  Here is what my hooves look like now:

UPDATE!!!!   (5-9-2007)

So I was bocking at Benvolio's yesterday, and I could just tell my tire's were going to shreds...  this is what I found once I took them off:

sweet, ye? here's the replacement:

pretty, arent they?  I'll add another update when these wear out, to compare between old and new tires in the way of wear time.  Smiley

Enjoy!

They look a little loose on the bottom, do they move at all?
Nice work though, white tyres look great Smiley

This is a very nice tutorial, triple jubilee clips are a bit over the top but i'm guessing it works well.

I've nominated this for the knowledge section as well  Grin

They dont slip at all, the sides just fold weird because the tire I used was stale.  I bought 6 clamps so I would have spares if any of them got screwed. I just decided to put them all on so I wouldnt loose any.  I know it could probrably work with only two.  Smiley  I've had them on for only a day now, and they are showing alot of wear (particularly on the riged tred part)  but I know they are old tires, so I dont expect them to last long.  I will point out that I fell in love with them the second I started using them.  I dont care how long they last, replacing them often is worth it!

i think the grip with tire socks is way better than stock hooves, especially in grass.  you might want to tape up the clamps, they tend to be a bit sharp.

Oh shut up Ollie...
I like BA's version of this, his tutorial is more laid-back (if that's possible) and shows it in a quick and easy way to follow. Althout personally I wouldn't cut the side walls off Smiley

I'll tell you my success with 'cutting the wire' once I use them a bit more.  I trimmed the sides because the tire was so stale that it wouldnt wrap around the hoof tightly enough before putting the clamps on.  I'll see if it works better with the walls when I replace my socks with new tires.  Smiley  thanks for the comments!

this is kinda obvious but when choosing a new tyre get a road bmx tyre rather than a soft offroad tyre!
