Sounds fun. I broke my bone in my upper arm falling off a bike (it's supposed to be one of the strongest bones)

Imagine how bad I will be on bocks Tongue

We used to do exercises of leaping off of trotting and galloping horses to learn how to fall properly, and then roller skating falls. It's best to try to roll in the direction of the fall, do not stiffen and throw out your hands to catch yourself and stop your movement. That's the way you can break your wrists. Let your momentum continue to carry you and dissipate the force through say, your legs if you ball up and your legs continue over your head, instead of a stiff flat impact on the ground. I remember once falling while skating fast, and I put my hands out just enough to initiate a forward roll instead of trying to stop myself dead. Using your hands to deflect your body into the safest direction to use up your falling momentum but not to stop yourself is best.

That's not specifically addressing bocking falls though.

I think the key (and I hope I have the presence of mind to do this when I fall) is to fall with your arms slightly bent at the elbows - no matter which direction you fall.  Do not stiff-arm the fall, because the ground will always win.

They don't help in bocking, trust me, I've tried it... You're falling a completely different way and it'll probably end up doing more harm than good.

What Bill C. said.
Let the energy go into flexing your arm at the joint, not in the bone.  Then let a bunch of energy go into your elbow pads (you do wear good, thick elbow pads, right?  If not, you earned it.)  If you think your elbow pad and elbow joint can't take it all, try to fall into a rolling motion with a heavy impact on the shoulder.  Keep a fairly stiff neck.  The only meaningful fall I've had I nearly knocked myself out through my helmet with whiplash.

Not that its easy to plan a fall heehehe  Grin. By the way, ElectricStapler, I used to do Jujitsu myself, but I am really not sure a Jujitsu fall is the best thing for the job... Especially when you are talking solid concrete beneath you.  Undecided

Get well soon ES

I did exactly the same as you (feet went out forwards and landed one arm straight) and had no wristies on and shattered my wrist several pics here have a look

http://www.projumpforum.co.uk/index.php?action=gallery;cat=8

I bought some Flexmeter multi sport wristies a week later they are longer so support higher up and have a velcro on slider pad to shoot your arms out from under you

About 3 months after the break I went over exactly the same way and no break so have a look at them mate you might need them for a bit more protection

Anyone have tips on how to avoid this kind of injury, when you're inexplicably falling backwards?

edit: please, no "Lol don't fall down!" posts
been thinking about this.

I teach kids how to recover from reward falls as part of my job.  Its a squat and half backward roll and aborb thing with an arm slap behind you to protect your kneck but with the extra distance from butt to ground.... im not sure yet.

Typically though broken wrist come from trying to stop a fall... cant be done. motion never stops.  Only takes seven pounds to break the ulna? with a sideward force. The little one. I get names mixed up.  So the more angular the force is thru that bone the closer to 14lbs it becomes.

When I get jumping stilts I'll get over the mats and experiment some on best way to do things.  It may end up being the best is to half twist and fall forward to toward your knees.... not sure yet.

A video tutorial demonstrating the least damaging way to fall in each direction while on stilts would be very helpful to all, if you felt like putting one together.

all this talk about the right way to fall is nice, but realistically when you actually fall your not gonna have time to think about it.
